MY STORY:
As far as running goes, Colleen started at the age of 10 running "the 1.5", "the 2.3", "the 3.1", and "the 4.2" on the suburban streets of Saratoga, CA, every week during P.E. Strange as it sounds, that was the most cutthroat, competitive environment she has yet to experience! The goal was, as a class, to accumulate enough mileage over the course of a year to cross the United States, virtually. Eighteen years later, Colleen has graduated to the 13.1, the 26.2, and other distances, and lives in San Francisco on a 15% graded street where she’s been getting several lifetimes worth of hill work in.
Colleen’s motivation to keep competing is the, “thrill of the chase…Competition lends a sort of teamness to what otherwise might be a very solitary pursuit.” It’s this motivation that keeps Colleen competing in events like the Boston Marathon, Escape from Alcatraz and the Big Sur Marathon. If you are ever in the Bay Area be sure to look up Colleen as I’m sure she will show you the sights, one hill at a time!
